For thousands of years, nomadic people have used the cliffs for shelter. In the late1200s, for a time, they were home to the Mogollon people. Our guide at the cliff dwellings will be Rita Garcia, the chief interpreter for Gila. On Saturday, we will visit the Deming Luna Mimbres Museum which contains an extensive Mimbres pottery collection and artifacts of the history of Deming. We will stay at the Historic Murray Hotel in Silver City (an art-deco masterpiece), and enjoy an optional dinner at the famous Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House in the old mining town of Pinos Altos. On the way home, we will visit the Mimbres Culture Heritage Site for a self-guided tour. In route, there is time for videos, presentations, and discussions of regional history and the significance of the Mogollon and Mimbres cultures.
