Ancient Sherds!

Painted pottery sherds

Today in the lab at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology, our Kuaua research team found some amazing sherds.  The images of ancient symbols appear on pieces of pots used five hundred years ago!  Someone painted the outlines of hands, of a seed of corn planted, a strange mysterious animal of some kind, a human outline, and maybe a sunrise or a sunset.  Finding a bag of such interesting pottery is the paycheck for our researchers as they comb through and repack boxes of Kuaua artifacts which have often not been viewed since they were packed away many years ago!  It was a fun day, and we hope that some of the pieces will find their way into our museum.  Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
